FAQs
The role of an interior designer is often confused with the role of an interior decorator. To put it simply, a decorator focuses purely on the aesthetics of a building or space. For an interior designer, the role of decorating certainly plays a part but a designer also has a thorough knowledge of the design process, construction and project management. Refer to the next question for a detailed list of my expertise.
My role is not to provide the structural details, this is where an architect or engineer comes in but a good designer is concerned with the functionality as well as the aesthetics. How a space functions, flows and the emotion it evokes is what really matters to me.
- Space planning
- Custom joinery design
- Documentation drawings for construction, including lighting and electrical plans, elevations, sections, details for all interior spaces.
- Selection of materials and finishes
- Selection of fittings and fixtures including door and joinery hardware and lighting
- Colour palettes
- Furniture layouts and selection
- Selection and placement of artwork
It really depends on the size and scope of the project but I typically charge an hourly rate for the time I spend. A fee estimate is provided prior to commencement based on the scope of works.
I pass on wholesale prices for all furniture, fabric and lighting purchases I make on your behalf.
- Interior designers add value through considered space planning, maximising the potential of a space in terms of flow and function and the level of comfort through thoughtful detailing.
On a recent project, I was called on to help improve the flow and function of an entry, hall and lounge room. By simply filling in an oversized opening off the entry and recommending a new glazed door in a new location, it opened up a whole new way for the client to use the space. A real sense of a entry was created, the flow of traffic improved and the furniture layout in the lounge room reworked. It was an obvious solution to me but one that had been overlooked by the client. Now they actually enjoy using the space!
- Interior Designers ensure costly mistakes aren’t made. As professionals, we have the skills, experience and foresight to identify and solve problems and make the right decisions as they arise (or before) quickly and confidently. We take control of what can otherwise be a timely and stressful process.
- We have relationships with reputable trades and suppliers who we trust to deliver good services and products.
- As a designer, I have access to trade pricing on all local and international furniture and this ranges from 10%-25% off retail. I pass on this trade pricing to my clients.
On a recent project, a client spent approximately $18,000 on furnishing part of their home. Savings amounted to around $2,500. My fees for this part of the job were approximately $1,800, an amount covered by the savings on the furniture.
