Australian House & Garden Feature
-
The October issue of Australian House & Garden is finally out and I am happy to share that one of my all time favourite projects is featured on page 24. Built over 5 years ago this Melbourne family home still looks as fresh today as it did when completed. Of course, photos never do a space justice but it will give you a feel for how the Handbury family lives in an Ali Ross Designed home.
My favourite space in the home is the playroom – a compact additional living space off the hallway that accommodates all the toys and dress ups within built in joinery. The space also conceals a TV, a workspace behind bi-fold doors and a daybed.
It’s a home with a wonderful sense of light and space and layers of texture and interest and it really allows the owners personality to shine through.
Please take a peak and let me know your thoughts. More photos can be seen under ‘work’ on my website. x
Product Love - Dish Tables by Grain
-
US Design Studio Grain, have launched a new collection of timber tables called Dish. A modern take on the hand carved African stool, they are sculptural and have a beautifully crafted feel and quality to them.
Grain explains, “A solid wood tabletop with a sloping underbelly is created with a little help from technology. A CNC router is used to cut away the slope under the tabletop as well as to create the sculptural legs.”
I will be adding this one to my list of top 10.
Product Find - Andreas Engevik
-
You may already be familiar with the work of Norwegian product designer Andreas Engevik. I have previously featured his marble candleholder ‘Chunk’ in one of my posts. Below are two more beautiful products from his range: his Bunad Blankets and his collection of free standing, hand blown glass sculptures called The Woods.
Designed in collaboration with Oslo based design studios StokkeAustad, inspiration for The Woods was found in the forests and the lights of the North. “A tree changing colours and transparency through the seasons is a fascinating process which was captured in this glass object.” Simply stunning.
Beautiful Spaces - The home of Faye Toogood
-
A glimpse into the home life of one of my favourite British designers Faye Toogood of Studio Toogood.
Calm yet moody, cosy yet raw, Faye describes her London home as her ‘sanctuary’ – her own collection of objects that work. It hasn’t been designed but rather it has evolved over time and quite beautifully I would say.
Beautiful Spaces
-
You know you’re a designer when the food is considered second to the restaurant interior or the fashion is noticed only once you have weighed up the design of the retail fitout. Don’t get me wrong, I adore fashion and accessories as much as the next girl but I would call it a healthy relationship rather than an obsession. Design on the other hand is my love.
This beautiful retail space is designer Roksanda Illincic’s first London store, designed by herself in collaboration with Britain’s David Adjaye. Zigzagging terazzo flooring, layered cement walls and stacked joinery all set the tone for the store and brand. The reflective metals add contrast while floor to ceiling colour and softer textures define the separate salon and fitting rooms.
Design Covet - Side Tables
-
I have always had a slight obsession with side tables. You can never have too many!
I love the flexibility of having a small table or a few small tables at different heights to serve a number of functions. With small living spaces and also in family homes where kids need room to play, grouping a couple of side tables together is a practical alternative to a larger coffee table. It allows you to add some personality too.
Here are my top 10: 1.Toulouse table by Jasper Morrison for Marsotto 2. Mark table for Moroso 3. Companions table by Ilse Crawford for De La Espada 4. Folded metal side table by Isamu Noguchi for Vitra 5. Dama stool Poliform 6. Shanghai Tip by Patricia Urquiola for Moroso 7. Tray table by Hay DK 8. Charlotte Side Table for E15 9. Burin By Patricia Urquiola for Moroso 10. Micado Table by Cecilie Manz

ON TREND – everyday marble objects
-
I adore honed marble – for its purity, depth and sophistication and it wins me over time and time again when contrasted with raw natural timbers and copper. It’s the ultimate material for many applications or is it? When it comes down to it, sadly marble is relatively porous and is simply not the most practical surface for kitchens servicing busy families which is why I am so enamoured by the range of beautiful everyday marble objects that are available to us. Now we can all have a little marble love in our lives.
